Early Educuation and the Montessori Method

Raphael's Madonna della Seggiola, 1514
Madonna of the Chair
In addition to our regular curriculum, SFA pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes benefit from a learning environment that is inspired by Maria Montessori. Materials for learning  practical life skills, language, math, geography, and science help the student develop focus and cultivate the child’s natural wonder for the world around him.  Ideas from the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, a Montessori program that explores the Catholic Faith, is an essential component within the Montessori classroom. Students in pre-K through second grade will benefit from The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program.

Properly implemented, the work of the Montessori 3-6 y.o. class prepares children for the tasks of learning to read, write, and compute in the primary grades.  Students build a strong foundation for the aquisition of these skills, making the work of the first and second grade more natural and less difficult.  Montessori children are able to escape the frustration which often accompanies traditional worksheets and busy work that lead to a distaste for the school environment and any work associated with learning.  They will instead, acquire a love of learning and a desire to succeed in school and in life.
